Privacy Policy

Oboeru (Vocabuilder) · Effective 22 August 2026

Oboeru ("Vocabuilder", "the app", "we", "us") is a vocabulary-learning app for studying Japanese words, published by Under Banyan. This policy explains what data the app collects, why, and how it is handled. By using the app you agree to the practices described here.

Information we collect

  • Account information. When you sign in we collect your email address and a unique account identifier. Sign-in is handled by a third-party authentication provider (email/password or Google Sign-In); we never see or store your password.
  • Your learning content. Vocabulary lists, words you add or import, study progress, and related settings you create in the app.
  • Purchase records. If you buy in-app items (such as bean packs), the app store's billing system processes the payment. We receive a purchase token and order identifier to confirm and credit the purchase. We do not receive or store your card or payment details.
  • Usage & analytics data. If you allow it, we collect anonymous information about how the app is used — which screens and features you open, session length and frequency, your app version, device model and operating-system version, and a general (country/region-level) location derived from your IP address. Your IP address itself is not stored. This is linked to a random, resettable app-instance identifier, not to your name. We never collect the device advertising ID.
  • Crash & diagnostic data. If you allow it, we collect crash reports and basic diagnostic information (such as the error and device type) so we can fix problems and keep the app running reliably.

How we use it

  • To provide the core features: authenticating you, saving and syncing your vocabulary and progress across your devices.
  • To process and verify in-app purchases and credit the corresponding items to your account.
  • To diagnose problems, prevent abuse, and improve the app's reliability.
  • If you have allowed analytics, to understand which features are used and how the app performs, so we can improve it.

We do not sell your personal data, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not collect the device advertising identifier.

Third-party services

To run the app we rely on a small number of trusted third-party service providers, which process data only on our behalf and only as needed to provide the app:

  • Cloud hosting, authentication, and database — to sign you in and to store and sync your account, vocabulary, and progress.
  • Usage analytics — anonymous usage analytics, only if you have allowed it (see below).
  • Crash and error diagnostics — to detect and fix problems, only if you have allowed it.
  • Payment processing — the app store's billing system processes in-app purchases; we never receive or store your card details.

These providers act as our processors under contract and are not permitted to use your data for their own purposes. Some may process data on servers located outside your country; where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards.

Analytics choices & consent

Usage analytics and crash reporting are optional and controlled by you. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland we ask for your consent when you first open the app and collect nothing until you agree. Elsewhere, analytics is on by default. Either way, you can turn analytics and crash reporting off — or back on — at any time under Settings → Privacy in the app. Turning it off stops any further collection.

Data retention & deletion

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account and its data at any time from Settings → Delete account in the app, which erases it immediately, or by contacting us at the email below. Purchase records are retained without any link to you, for as long as required for tax and refund purposes. Unused beans are not refunded on deletion. See Delete your account for the full detail of what is removed and what is kept.

Security

Data is stored on reputable, industry-standard cloud infrastructure and transmitted over encrypted connections. While no method of storage or transmission is completely secure, we follow reasonable measures to safeguard your information.

Children

The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date at the top of this page.
